You may experience the past even amid modern development if you know
where to look. For instance, the Florida ecosystem seen by the first
Spanish explorers is preserved in the state's only river with "wild and
scenic" status, the Loxahatchee. You can explore it by renting a canoe
or a small skiff in Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Between mangrove
shores, you are in an amazingly remote part of South Florida shared only
with nesting birds, turtles, and an occasional alligator.
In addition to a river trip, the park has extensive hiking and nature
trails, some with identification signs explaining the unfamiliar flora.
If we have piqued your interest in this history destination, the park
is near Hobe Sound, Florida, and the Ranger Station phone number is
(561) 546-2771. If you can't get there, paddle on over to our Keyword
Search and type "Loxahatchee River" for river views, or "Jonathan
Dickinson State Park" AND "nature trail" for views along the Sand Pine
Nature Trail.
We'll bring you more destinations where you can take journeys through
time. Let us know your interests!
